We recommend using a weight distribution system when the trailer weighs 50 percent or more of the vehicle weight or if the rear of the vehicle is sagging. I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution for you to view.

If you determine that weight distribution is needed you will need to go by the loaded tongue weight of the trailer. You can calculate the loaded tongue weight by combining the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

For a trailer that weighs 4,000 lbs you'd most likely have a tongue weight of between 400 and 600 lbs. Which the best system for that would be the Reese Strait Line part # RP66083 which has a tongue weight range of 400-800 lbs and features only sway control to fight sway before it starts.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
