Installing Reese Base Rails on 2016 Ram 1500 with 5-1/2 Foot Bed
Question:
I have a 2016 RAM with a 5.5 ft bed. I know that Im going to use a sidewinder tongue box. What is the proper distance to mount the rails from the rear end of my bed forward?

For a custom base rail kit that is confirmed to fit your 2016 Ram 1500 with the 5-1/2 foot bed I recommend the Reese Quick-Install # RP50142-58. When mounting the rails, the rear base rail will be positioned 28-15/16 inches from the tailgate (see attached image).
This base rail kit includes custom brackets that will use existing holes in your truck's frame to eliminate the need for any frame drilling. I have attached the complete written instructions that you can also check out.
For a fifth-wheel hitch, the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30928 that you were looking at is a really nice option. It features a forged, single-piece jaw that will wrap completely around the king pin for a secure connection and a wide funnel for easy hookup. It has a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.
As you mentioned, you will also need to replace the king pin on your trailer with a Reese Sidewinder to provide you with the needed cab clearance during tight turns. In order to pick out the correct Sidewinder, you will need to determine the pin box model number on your trailer, which should be located somewhere on the unit itself. If you can tell me what pin box you have on the trailer, I will be happy to recommend the correct Sidewinder product.
