Do I Need Brake Control Wiring Adapter # 22292 To Install Brake Controller on 2009 Ford F-150 XLT

Question:

Hi, I just recently pruchased a 2009 F-150 XLT 4x2 crew cab and I need to install a trailer brake control. How can I tell if the plug and play cable will work, or if I will need to start from scratch? The truck has a 4.6L 3V engine with a 6 speed automatic transmission. It also has a class III receiver I dont believe it is the factory install and a 4 pin trailer plug which is factory install, but no 7 pin plug. The gear or has a tow/haul button. Some of the online forums I have read which lead me to your website keep mentioning fuse 17. I checked my truck, and fuse 17 is present both under the hood and under the dash the forum did not specify which location. The forums also mentioned needing to get my truck flashed by a dealer so it would be able to communicate with the brake control as well. Would this be necessary? Last, but not least, what brake control and accessories would you recommend for an install? I will be using a weight distribution hitch to tow a bumper pull rv with a loaded weight of about 7000#. The rv is dual axle with electric brakes. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this. I do greatly appreciate it.

Both trims of the 2009 F-150, with the factory 4-way, and the models with the factory 7-way will use the Brake Control Wiring Adapter, part # 22292.

Since your F-150 only has a factory 4-way, you will also need to use the Hopkins Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole, part # 37185, which will give you a 7-way at the rear of your F-150. I have linked a video installation of part # 37185 on a different vehicle which shows where to connect each wire.

Your truck will not need to be flashed by the dealership for the brake controller to work. Only trucks equipped with a factory brake controller using an aftermarket controller would have to do so.

For a brake controller, I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885. It is one of our most popular brake controllers for its ease of installation and user friendliness. You will also need the # 22292 adapter that you mentioned.

I have linked an FAQ Article on brake controllers and a video installation of the Brake Control Wiring Adapter, part # 22292 and the Hopkins Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole, part # 37185.
