Recommended Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier for 2014 Chevy Sonic Hatchback with Sunroof

Question:

I have a 2014 Chevy Sonic LTZ Hatchback with the power sunroof and no roof rails of any kind. I am looking to occasionally carry a kayak possibly two. Will this work with the sunroof, or am I completely out of luck for adding a roof rack?

Installing a roof rack on your 2014 Chevy Sonic Hatchback that features a powered sunroof is not an issue. The potential problem is only if you want to operate the sunroof with the crossbars mounted on the roof, as it's possible that it may interfere with the bars when being raised or with any accessories you have mounted like your kayaks. Generally speaking though, we don't recommend opening the sunroof with a roof rack installed anyway, as the crossbars (even the quieter aero-style units) can be pretty noisy with the window open.

The Rhino-Rack Vortex Roof Rack System that you referenced, consisting of # RRVA118B-2 for the two 46 inch Vortex Aero Crossbars, # RRRLKVA for the 2500 Series Legs, and # DK399 for the Custom Fit Kit, is confirmed to fit your Chevy Sonic and will work great.

I have included a short video demonstration on this roof rack that you can also check out.

To secure your kayak(s) to the crossbars, I recommend taking a look at the Thule Hull-A-Port XT # TH848. This J-style carrier feature a multi-position design that allows you to carry 1 or 2 kayaks. Tie-down straps and anchors are included to secure everything into place.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this carrier that you can also check out.
