Gauge Wire Recommended for Wiring up Trailer Brake Assemblies
Question:
What gauge wire would be required for a brake axle application on a 12V system with a brake controller the brake magnets require 7.5amps in order to operate, and the distance from the hitch where the truck will connect to the wire ran for the brake itself is approximately 60 feet. The typical gauge wire used is a 14/2 stranded wire. Given the distance of wire needed, what gauge wire would be required to account for distance and amperage loss, and are there any charts that would outline this specific type of application?

Helpful Expert Reply:
I'd recommend using 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 for the length you need. Most assemblies only use 12 gauge but with 10 gauge you'd be good even at that distance.
