When you say that you can't use the plug for factory wiring on your 2008 Ford Explorer does that mean you have a factory 4-Way and just need to add a 7-Way or does it mean that the factory connector is inaccessible or broken?
If you have a factory 4-Way and just need to add a 7-Way you can use # ETBC7 to add the 7-Way, retain the 4-Way, and it comes with wiring and accessories to install a brake controller. If you need and want a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.
If you do not have a factory connector, can't access it, or it is damaged then you can still add a 7-Way. The first step would be to hardwire in a 4-Way which will take care of the lighting functions. For that you would need to tap into the tail light wires on the vehicle to install # 119178KIT.
Once it is installed you can then install # ETBC7. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
