Your 2013 Ford Explorer XLT will only be equipped with the factory brake controller port under the dash if it has a factory 7-Way connector at the rear bumper. If this is the case, then all you need to install a brake controller like the excellent Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 is the Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3035-P. One end of the adapter plugs into the brake controller itself, while the other end plugs into the factory port beneath the dash.
If your Explorer came equipped with a factory 4-Way connector or no connector at all, the brake controller will just need to be hardwired to the vehicle wiring and battery. You will also need to add a fully-functional 7-Way to the Explorer for the needed brake output circuit.
If the vehicle does not have any connector at the rear bumper, you will need to start with a 4-Way. For this I recommend the Curt T-Connector # C56093. This will install by plugging into factory ports behind the trim panels in the cargo area (on the driver and passenger side) and then running the hot lead up to the battery.
From there (or if you already have a 4-Way), you will need to use the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 to install a fully functional 7-Way from the 4-Way. This kit includes everything you need to install the 7-Way connector and the additional wiring and circuit breakers necessary for installing a brake controller.
I have attached a great article that details the installation steps for this kit that you might find helpful.
