The problem sound like you need to wire the green wire to the right side (passenger side) tail light on the vehicle. This is for the right turn signal and brake. The yellow and brown wires should be connected on the left side (driver side). Yellow is for left turn and brake. Brown is for running lights. White is the ground and needs to be attached to a clean metal surface.

If the yellow and green wires are attached in the same place, both trailer lights will blink together. If the brown wire is attached to the turn signal circuit, the running lights will flash at the same time. Use the included circuit tester with wiring harness # 18252 to find the correct wires on the vehicle. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation of the wiring harness.

The trailer having 5 wires sounds like it is a wishbone harness or has a wire used for a reverse lockout on a surge coupler. If it is a wishbone harness the running light circuit is split at the trailer connector. One wire goes to the left side and the other to the right side. This is so you do not have to have a jumper wire at the back for tail lights.

If you have a surge coupler with a reverse lockout, that wire goes to a solenoid on the coupler that does not allow the brakes to engage when the vehicle is put into reverse. For that to work, you would need a 5-Way adapter on the vehicle, # 20036. The extra blue wire attaches to the reverse light wire on the vehicle. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation.
