Parts for Flat Towing 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup Behind Class C Motorhome
Question:
Hello, I need help getting set up to tow a 1998 Chevy s-10 2 wheel drive behind my 2005 Class C Coachmen Freelander. I need tow bar , wiring harness, braking system , base plates, locking hitch pin. Please let me know what information you need to be able to supply me with a complete package. I have a receiver rated to tow 3500 pounds attached to my motor home. I have been admiring Roadmaster, but would appreciate your best recommendation. Thank you

We can help you with the items needed for flat towing your 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup behind your Coachmen Class C motorhome.
Starting with base plates, you can use Roadmaster Classic kit # 161-2 which has fixed drawbars that cannot be removed, but these do cost less than all other options. This and all other base plates appear on the linked page. I recommend sticking with one brand of base plate and tow bar to eliminate the extra cost and complexity of the adapters you'd need to mix parts from different makers. With these plates you can use the Roadmaster Falcon 2 tow bar # RM-520 and Safety Cable kit # RM-643.
For a braking system I like the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This setup does NOT require an invasive installation and it can easily move with you to your next towed vehicle since it is fully portable and features wireless operation.
For wiring you have options that include simple magnetic lights like # TL21RK, hardwire diode kits like # RM-15267 and bulb/socket kits like # RM-155. You can refer to the linked article for more information about each type of installation.
Another article that I linked will help you select the right high/low adapter.
The curb weight of the 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup is 3200-lbs or less, depending on equipment, so it is within the towing capacity of your Class C's 3500-lb hitch rating. However, the online owner's manual I reviewed indicates on page 4-40 that the 2WD version of this vehicle will require special modifications before it can be flat towed, so you'll want to check your manual and/or with a local dealership. The mods probably include a transmission lube pump and/or a driveshaft disconnect kit.
