Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2006 Mini Cooper with a Blue Ox Base Plate Kit

Question:

We are purchasing a 2006 Mini Cooper with what appears to be a Roadmaster connection already installed see attached photo. This rest of the tow package is missing. If this is a Roadmaster connection what model would we need to purchase to connect to our RV? Thanks for your help!

The Roadmaster Base Plate Kit that fits your 2006 Mini Cooper is a part # 521876-1 but from the picture you sent in it looks like you actually have the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1303 instead. If you are missing the pins then those can be found as part # BLU57XR on our site (this comes as a pair). You may want to make sure that the base plate kit itself doesn't need to be replaced though. The opening there looks a little rough so you may want to try sanding it and applying some Rustoleum. If the rest of the base plate looks like that then I highly recommend installing a new base plate kit for the sake of safety.

For a complete flat towing setup you will need the base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. If you don't already have a tow bar then I recommend going with the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7380 which comes with safety cables. If you already do have the tow bar and you need safety cables then I recommend using the Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643.

If you will be flat towing your Mini Cooper often then I recommend installing a lighting system and braking system that permanently install so that it cuts down on time needed to transition your vehicle to and from flat towing. For this I recommend the wiring part # RM-155 and the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251.

If you will only be towing every once in awhile then I recommend a light kit like part # TL21RK and a braking system like the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR which are easier to install but will need to be setup every time you flat tow.

Most flat towing setups require a high-low adapter for the tow bar to remain level while towing. I have linked our selection of adapters as well as a helpful article that will help you determine which is the best one for your application for you to check out.
