Parts Needed to Install Trailer Brake Controller on 2002 Jeep Liberty with 7-Way Connector
Question:
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited Edition with the factory tow package. The Jeep already has the 7 pin plug at the receiver. The trailer I will be towing is a single axle 2000 lb trailer with a 7 pin plug also. What controller would you recommend and what harness would I need to install this myself? I want to order the entire works from you guys and install this myself so part numbers would be helpful too.

For your 2002 Jeep Liberty, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. This is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Jeep. It features an easy-to-read LCD display, storable settings, and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues.
Your Jeep Liberty is not equipped with a brake controller port, so to install the controller, you will just need to use the Wiring Kit # 5506. This kit includes the needed duplex wire and 30-amp circuit breaker for installing a brake controller on your vehicle.
The blue wire from the brake controller will connect to the existing 7-Way at the rear of your Jeep, specifically 6 o'clock position inside the connector (see attached image). For some additional wire to reach this distance, you can use # 10-1-1, which is sold by the foot.
The red wire from the brake controller will then be connected to the cold side of the brake light switch, near the top of the brake pedal in your Jeep. You will want to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to locate the correct wire, which will ONLY receive power with the brake pedal depressed and no power with any other function. Based on my research, this wire on your Jeep Liberty should be white and tan, so you can start by testing this one.
The black wire from the controller will run to the positive side of the battery and the white wire is for ground, which will be run to the negative side of the battery.
I have attached an additional image that clarifies the wiring connections you will make.
