Solution for Curt Q24 Fifth Wheel Hitch that Progressively Allows More Chucking

Question:

I have installed the Curt C24 for my 5th Wheel It weighs right at 16000 lbs. I also installed an air trailer king pin unit. With the air bags and shoch absorber. I have always had a slight thump when starting to pull but this has now gotten much worse and from the test I did today I could see the king pin unit move inside the hitch. I am on my way North and will have it looked at tomorrow but I am concerned that the hitch is defective. Any ideas?

The thump you are experiencing is known as "chucking" and it's caused basically by the excess movement that a hitch head allows between it and the king pin. Curt fifth wheel hitches are somewhat known for this and we've seen and heard of them getting worse with time. The best solution is a new hitch with tighter king pin to hitch head clearance like the Reese Select Plus part # RP30081 which uses a single hook design that holds the pin very tightly and will get rid of the chucking you are experiencing.
