Parts Needed to Add a Brake Controller to a 2008 Ford F-150
Question:
I have the brake controller, and the under dash adapter plug, plus the relay to add to the fuse box in the cab. I have confirmed power to the factory installed OEM wires to the OEM female plug for the run towards the front of the truck. But pass that female plug the male side to the tail lights and current flat four, plus ground is missing the pins and wires past it. If it had them the truck would have a OEM round 7 pin. Here is my issue, the Ford part number 5L3Z-13A576-BA would give me the seamless “water and salt air proof” connection I need. Thus adding the 7 pin. I want to avoid “splicing into” or “tapping into” the long run side of the wire loom past the female side of the plug. Using your part number #37185. Because, where I live in the PNW I’m so close to the Pacific Ocean that salt in the air will compromise that connection over a shorter than normal time frame. I see you all have a custom fit OEM like type system for older F-150’s. Your part number Item # 118247. But not one comparable to the above stated Ford OEM part number. Which the OEM part is getting hard to find and is marked well above the Ford stated MSRP in most cases. Do you all offer a aftermarket option? Or at least a male version of the rectangle multi pin wiring harness with flying leads? Because tapping into the loom before that plug is not an option in my eyes to use part #37185. I do have a solution for you although we do not have an equivalent to the Ford OEM part number that you referenced.
Using either the Hopkins # 37185 or the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 are going to be your best options. The Ford OEM harness is claimed to be "water and salt air proof" but we have heat shrink butt connectors # DW05744-5 and # DW05745-5 which give you a much better seal than any connector once they are properly installed.
Once you have installed either connector you can keep your pins clean by using Dielectric Grease # 11755.
I have attached a helpful article as well as an installation video that you can reference. The P3 # 90195 brakes controller showcased in the video is one of our best options which I recommend going with.
