How to Determine if a Trailer Wheel is Hub-Centric or Lug-Centric

Question:

my utility trailer and rims are old and unidentifiable. For me to make decisions about roadworthiness, I need the answer to one question... Is it the pilot centre hole of the rim that supports the weight of the trailer and load, or is it the 5 taper-head bolts? Thanks

First, I would say if there is any question on the road worthiness of the trailer, take the steps to correct it. Better safe than sorry.

Some trailers have wheels that are hub-centric, the wheel is centered on the hub using the center pilot holes. Other trailers have wheels that are lug-centric, the wheel is centered on when you tighten down the lug nuts.

To determine which one you have on your trailer, take a look at how the wheel attaches to the hub. If it uses wheel bolts, like # 7-23, then it is hub-centric.

If it has wheel studs that are built into the hub, and lug nuts like # CE11051, then it is lug-centric.
