Hydraulic Drum Brake Conversion on 2006 Karravan Dual Axle Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a 2006 Karravan, dual axle, boat trailer with 14inch wheels. It has disc brakes which I want to switch to drum. The axle looks like a Dexter with a 4 bolt, 2 7/8inch bolt to bolt pattern. The surge brake is rated at 7000# so I believe the axles are 3500# each. Will I have trouble connecting the existing caliper rubber flex line to the wheel cylinder? It appears I need 2 AKFBBRK-35-D, correct? I need heavy salt corrosion protection.

The 4 bolt mounting you are measuring is the standard size for your axle size. They will be compatible with hydraulic drum brake assemblies. For your brake assemblies, I recommend the Hydraulic Brake Kit - Dacromet # AKFBBRK-35-D you referenced. These will mount using the Mounting Bolts and Hardware for 10" Single Brake Assembly # BRKH10AS.

For your hubs, I recommend the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - Galvanized # AKHD-545-35-G-K. These will have the salt corrosion protection.

The brake lines including the flex line to your current calipers will not be an issue for your wheel cylinder conversion, but your master cylinder in your brake actuator will be too strong and will need to be replaced. If you let me know what surge brake actuator you have, I can help you get the correct replacement to reduce the psi to the correct level for drum brakes.
