Do Spring Bars Need Be Removed While Turning in Reverse with Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System

Question:

I have a Fastway E2 WE hitch. Do I need to remove the round bars before making a sharp turn as I back my trailer into my driveway?

Yes, you will need to disengage the spring bars on your Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System like part # FA94-00-1000 if you will be making any tight turns while in reverse. This will ensure you do not put too much tension on the bars which could cause them to break. You can disengage them by simply removing the L-pins that hold the spring bars to the frame brackets.

I have the same setup and question as above. To clarify from the response, can I simply remove the L-pins and let the spring bars drop off as I backup? Or should I jack the hitch up to release the pressure and then remove them?

If possible I would actually jack up the hitch to relieve that pressure first and then remove the bars before backing up.

@ChrisR ok I am confused. Why is backing up any different than making tight turns moving forward. Also if the specs say that it "Allows Backing Up" why the disconnect?

Hey Ken, this would be a situational thing. Here is an excerpt from the install directions. "Disengage weight distribution before towing or backing the trailer where there is a significant transition in grade which puts excessive strain on the hitch, i.e. a flat street to a steep uphill driveway". So to boil it down, can you back up while using it? Yes, IF you are on a flat surface that doesn't require you to make sharp turns. You can't do sharp turns because the spring bars could make contact with the trailer tongue and cause damage to themselves or the trailer. If you are not on an even surface it will put undue stress on the WD system and can cause failure or damage. Does this clear it up for you?
