There are a couple of things you can check on the Hopkins Agility Brake Controller, # HM47295. First, make sure that the red wire is connected to the correct wire on your 2008 Chevy. The 2008 model trucks and SUVs should have the wiring for a brake controller under the dash, below the steering column, and to the left of the brake pedal.
The brake controller red wire should be attached to the light blue wire on the vehicle. This wire should only send power to the brake controller and out to the brakes when the brake pedal is pressed. If you see an orange wire, do not connect it to any of the brake controller wiring.
I also recommend checking the trailer and vehicle side connectors for any dirt or corrosion that may be causing a short. Corrosion can also build up behind the connectors where the wires attach.
I have included a brake controller troubleshooting video and an FAQ article that may help.
