What Size Weight Distribution System should be Used with a 770 Pound Trailer Tongue Weight
Question:
I have a 2007 ram 1500 with 5.7 hemi and 3.92 axle ratio and just purchased a 2012 cougar half ton series 29 ft TT with a tongue wt of 770 lbs and GTW of 7800 lbs. I have a 400 -800 weight distribution system with dual cam sway control now. Will this handle the trailer OK or should I install a 600-1200 system.

Expert Reply:
Since tongue weight will also include anything loaded in the towing vehicle that is behind the rear axle AND the tongue weight can fluctuate, it would be a good idea to move up to the next highest system. It is always better to have a system that is larger than one that is too small.
If you have a round bar system, you would need to replace the head with # RP58167, and the bars listed above. For the cost you would be better off with a new system, # RP66022, and using the same dual-cam sway control from the old system.
I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control for you.
