Parts Needed to Install Trailer Brake Controller in 1997 Ford Explorer XLT
Question:
Hi, where can I find the cold side of brake switch to attach to the brake controller, what color is the wire and where is it located. My vehicle is a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT with a 4.0 Ltr. V6. Thanks.

Auto makers do not consistently use the same color wire throughout a vehicle production run so the color of the wire is not a reliable way to find the cold side of the brake light switch on your 1997 Ford Explorer.
The correct wire for connection to the red wire on a trailer brake controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195 will best be determined by testing the wires at the brake light switch. You want to use the wire that shows power ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed and at no other time. You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the wires.
We offer a complete brake controller installation kit # ETBC7 that includes a tester, 7-way vehicle socket and all the needed wiring parts. This along with the controller of your choice is all you need if the vehicle has a 4-pole wiring harness; if not you will also need a kit such as # 118345, or part # 118241 if the Explorer came with a factory connector.
The linked article and video will help show the installation process.
