Could Trailer Wiring Short Damage Factory Module of Jeep Cherokee

Question:

The dealer said he had to order a fuse / slash computer module located under the hood. Must have shorted out. It’s covered but warranty, about $1000. This was why I had no power to my factory installed trailer harness and plug. Also said he didn’t know why it blew but it may have been my trailer wiring that caused it. This doesn’t sound right to me ,not at all. Does make sense or are they covering there ass if it happens again? Thanks

Trailer wiring shorts can cause fuses and relays to damage themselves to the point of needing replacement. Some Mopar vehicles have expensive modules that make this an even bigger deal. The older Ram trucks have TIPM that has an internal breaker that only a Ram dealer can reset. And after a few times a new one has to be bought for over $1,000.

Based on that I'm not too shocked that your Jeep dealer told you what they did. I'd go over your trailer wiring looking for any shorts you can find and fix them as needed. Common issues are exposed wire or corrosion. Sometimes it can be wiring that overdraws.
