Using Wire for Bed Cap 3rd Brake Light Instead of Brake Stoplight Switch to Install Brake Controller

Question:

2002 Dodge Dakota - Im installing this brake controller and have a questiuon about the connection to the brake pedal switch. I just installed a cap on the truck and at the rear, Dodge provides a connection wire for the caps 3rd brake light. It would be easier for me to connect the brake controller to this wire and run a length of wire up to the cab to the controller. Is there any reason I cant do this? Im going to get the same 12vdc brakes have been applied signat to the controller arent I?

As long as you have verified that the wire in question only goes hot when the brake pedal is applied, there is no reason why you cannot use the wire intended for the bed cap third brake light. If you do not have a circuit tester, we offer one, part # PTW2993.

Certain vehicles (like GM trucks produced in the late 1990s) had brake switch wiring that was very difficult to access. In those instances, we typically recommend doing exactly what you propose.
