Hitch Mounted Bike Rack with Locks to Carry 4 Bikes on a 2010 Honda Odyssey

Question:

Hello, Im looking to buy a bike rack for a hitch. I see on your website that there are a lot of great options. My concern is theft. Is there a security lock mechanism available for any of your bike racks which would prevent the rack from being stolen/removed from the hitch? Do all racks have security option or just certain ones? Im looking currently at getting a 4 bike rack which connects to a hitch on my mini van.

We do carry a lot of bike racks and a good number of them include some sort of security built in whether it be for the bikes, the rack, or both. I prefer to recommend racks that include locks for both the rack and bikes.

If you're interested in a hanging rack I recommend the Yakima RidgeBack, # Y02458. It can hold 4 bikes that each weigh up to 37-1/2 pounds. Hanging racks carry bikes by their crosstube. If any of the bikes you're going to be carrying don't have a straight horizontal crosstube like a men's bike generally does then you also need an adapter bar, like part # 64005. This helps carry the bikes level.

On the other hand we have platform racks that don't requre an adapter bar. Racks like the Saris Frredom SuperClamp EX, part # SA4026F, hold the bikes by the wheels. Platform racks often have a higher weight capacity, up to 60 pounds for the inner 2 bikes in this case, and easier to load than hanging racks. However, they're also more expensive.

Another option, that's more economical, is to get a good hanging rack, like the ever popular Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR, and add locks to it. The Thule Snug Tite Hitch Lock, part # THSTL2, combiend with a cable lock, like part # TH538XT, will work just fine.
