Troubleshooting Draw-Tite Activator Brake Controller 5504 in 2004 Ford F-250

Question:

My brake lights suddenly stopped working. Vehicle is a 2004 F250. The controller is blank unless I push the slide over to the left and I get brake lights on the truck and trailer and the trailer brakes operate. No brake lights on the truck or trailer if I just press the brake pedal. There is a dot on the display also when I slide the control to the left. I have no blown fuses but have not replaced the relay. Whats the likely problem?

Based on your description of the symptoms it sounds like you may still have a bad brake light fuse or relay. Since the Activator brake controller # 5504 does generate brake output power and activate your truck and trailer lights with the manual override engaged this tends to suggest that there is not any internal fault in the controller.

I recommend replacing the relay and re-checking all fuses for the truck light circuits.
