Dodge trucks around the year your 2007 Dodge Dakota was made can be difficult when it comes to fixing trailer wiring issues. The TIPM which controls the trailer wiring is pretty easy to short out and only a dealer can fix it.
The easiest way around it is to bypass it all together with a 4-way kit like the Curt # 55323 and then convert it to a 7-way with the part # 37185.
