Compatibility of a Chain-Hanger Style Weight Distribution System with a Surge Brake Actuator
Question:
When I do my search, it shows that this system is compatible with surge brakes. Are there any caveats to that statement? I had heard that the chain style WD hitches were incompatible with surge brakes.

Some chain-style Weight Distribution (WD) systems have been rated by their manufacturers to be used with a surge brake actuator while others have not. Curt is one of the manufacturers that says some of their WD systems, like part # C17050 that you referenced, are okay for this purpose.
Since this isn't something that is consistent among all manufacturers I recommend staying away from this kind of system. Instead I recommend using a system like the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0600. This comes with 2-point sway control and has similar weight ratings at 6,000 lbs GTW (Gross Towing Weight) and a 250 lb - 600 lb Tongue Weight (TW) capacity. You just need a hitch ball like 2" part # EQ91-00-6080 to complete your towing setup. We do recommend using a 1-7/8" thin-walled socket like part # EQ70-00-4800 to make installing the hitch ball much easier.
Please note that you want to choose a WD system with a TW range that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your towing setup falls in the middle of. To find the TTW of your towing setup you will need to add the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer along with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Keep in mind that a properly loaded trailer will have a TW that is 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer.
If you can give me some more details about the weight of your trailer I can make a recommendation for you if the Fastway option isn't a fit.
