Recommended Cargo Basket for 2016 Ford Explorer with Factory Roof Rack

Question:

Hi, I have a 16 Explorer Sport with the factory side rails and cross bars installed. I am looking at either the Thule Canyon # TH859XT or Rola #59504 cargo baskets. I am concerned about the fit with the factory cross bars since they are not straight but are arched. Will I need straight bars for any of these baskets to fit snug and flat? Is there a cargo basket out there that will be a better fit? Or will the arched bars cause the basket to sit higher or prevent things from lying flat in the basket? Sorry for all the questions...

Most factory crossbars tend to have a bit of an arch to them like what you are noticing on your 2016 Ford Explorer. This will not be an issue as it relates to the fit of a cargo basket (or other roof-mounted accessory). The only thing you might want to do is simply position the basket in the center of the roof so it doesn't lean any to one side or another.

I recommend going with the Thule Canyon XT# TH859XT that you referenced. Its dimensions of 49 inches long and 40 inches wide are very similar to the Rola model you also mentioned, but it is a bit more adjustable in terms of the crossbar spreads it will work with. It simply needs a crossbar spread (distance between crossbars on center) of 20 to 37 inches, while the Rola unit requires a specific spread measurement. A great thing about the Thule carrier is that it also includes a fairing on the front to deflect the wind.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this product that you can also check out.
