How Much Space is Needed for Tires When Building a Trailer

Expert Reply:
We recommend at least 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 inches between the tire tread and the underside of the fenders (Or the floor if your wheels are directly underneath.). This gives you plenty of room for travel in the trailer's supsension.
You also want to keep at least an inch or two between the tire's sidewall and any part of the trailer. As well as at least 2 to 4 inches in between the two tires.
I've linked a help article on axle placement for you to take a look at as well. It lays out some steps you can take to get proper spacing and tongue weight.
