When picking out a weight distribution system, the most important factor to consider is the total tongue weight of your towing setup. This number includes both the loaded tongue weight of the trailer (as if loaded and ready for a trip), along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your F-150. Ideally, this number will fall somewhere near the middle of the operating range for the weight distribution system you choose.

Using a scale like the Sherline # e99044 is the most accurate method for determining your trailer's loaded tongue weight, but we can take a pretty good estimate based on the information you provided in your question. I am not sure if the 390-pound hitch/tongue weight you mentioned is with the trailer fully loaded or dry/empty. If it is dry (or you are unsure), we can use the GVW you provided of 3,890 pounds to determine a possible loaded tongue weight range. The GVW refers to the most the trailer can weigh when fully loaded. Because a trailer's tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of its total weight, we can use this number to estimate a loaded tongue weight range of 389 pounds to 584 pounds.

If this ends up being an accurate estimate, I recommend taking a look at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET. This is a great system with a tongue weight capacity of 200 to 600 pounds that will do a really nice job of distributing weight over the axles of your truck and trailer. Its integrated 4-Point Sway Control will drastically reduce any side-to-side movement and the clamp-on brakets allow for a no-drill installation.

Both the adjustable shank and hitch ball are included in this system, so nothing else needs to be obtained separately.

If you find that your actual total tongue weight creeps up close to or over this system's 600 pound limit (remembering to factor in any added cargo weight behind your truck's rear axle), a better option will be the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66083. This system features a tongue weight capacity of 400 to 800 pounds. This is another really nice system that has automatically self-adjusting sway control that will work in a variety of situations, including straight-line movement, cornering, and sudden swerving.

For this particular system, you will just need to add a compatible hitch ball like the 2 inch # A-90 or the 2-5/16 inch # 19286.

I have attached a couple short video demonstrations on these two systems that you can check out, along with an FAQ on weight distribution systems that you might find helpful.
