In case you might prefer this option, we do have rooftop cargo bags that can be used WITHOUT a roof rack or metal cargo basket. If you want a cargo bag that is close to the basket's size you can use the Rhino-Rack waterproof bag # RRLB500 which mounts to the roof basket (but which cannot mount to the bare roof).

If you are not especially tall you might want to consider the handy Telesteps folding step # TE97FR which comes fully assembled. This step is lightweight and folds up to a small size yet it gives you almost a foot of extra reach for loading an unloading your rooftop cargo. I own one of these and it is as handy around the house and garage as it is on the road.

Please keep in mind that the car's roof has a fixed weight capacity (noted in the owner's manual) so make sure the total weight of the roof rack, basket, bag and its contents remains within that capacity.
