Hopkins Smart Hitch Camera System HM50002 Wiring Installation on 2005 Toyota Tundra

Question:

Regarding my newly purchased Hopkins HM50002. My 2005 Toyota Tundra has the 7 way connector adapter, but it does not have a factory hitch. plug comes apart in the back allowing its use. Would you have any step by step instructions on how I splice the appropriate wires to make this work? Thanks

The Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 includes a round U.S. Car Connector that connects inline with the similar connector that joins a factory 7-way. The reverse light signal that is typically used to activate a camera like this (so that it will function as a backup camera) is among the signals included in this type of wiring set-up. Usually the center pin carries the reverse light signal; please refer to the linked photo and article on wiring.

However, if you have only 4-pole type wiring like # C59496 (4-pole wiring is also shown in the wiring article) the reverse light signals is NOT included in this wiring format. You can tap into the reverse light wire on either of the Tundra tail lights instead.

Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find the one wire at the tail light plug that goes hot only when the vehicle is in reverse gear. Have an adult helper assist you to ensure your safety. Test the wires while the truck is in reverse to find the one that carries the reverse light signal, then splice into that wire using a Quick Splice # SWC501915-1 to obtain your camera power.
