Maximum Speed Rating of a 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire

Question:

I will be pulling this little trailer behind my motorcycle. it has 4.80-8inch tires on it. I travel a lot of highways where the speed limit is 75-80 miles per hour My question is, is it ok to run those speeds with these tires, or should I go to a different tire or even different size tire and wheel? thanks

Helpful Expert Reply:

I do not recommend running down the highway with your 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tires at 75-80 mph. Most 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tires have a maximum speed rating of 65 mph which will need to be adhered to unless otherwise stated on the tire with an alphabetic character such as "L" or "N".

In order to obtain a trailer tire with a higher speed rating you would need to switch to a larger size like a 205/65-10 which measures 20.5" diameter x 8.1" wide. For this, I recommend the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM1HP56. This tire has an N speed rating that is suitable for speeds up to 87 mph.
