Is Weight Distribution Needed For 2007 Ford Expedition Towing a Titan 3,000-Lb Loaded Trailer

Question:

I have a 2007 Ford Expedition and a Stealth Titan 5x8 trailer. The rated GVW of the trailer is 2000lbs. I would estimate to tongue weight to be in the neighborhood of 200lbs loaded and the load in the trailer is probably at 600lbs currently and could go as high as 1000lbs. Do you believe that a weight distribution system is needed for this application? Thank you in advance

A good rule to follow when deciding whether or not to use weight distribution is to remember that weight distributing systems should be used any time the trailer weighs more than 50 percent of the tow vehicles weight. So with the trailer at almost 2,000 pounds, and 1,000 pounds loaded on it, you are looking at about 3,000 pounds total trailer weight.

Since the 2007 Ford Expedition can weigh as much as 7,700 pounds, a weight distribution may not be required for your setup, but you would still benefit from using a weight distribution system. I am attaching a link to a FAQ on weight distribution systems.

I recommend the Reese Weight Distribution System with Shank, Trunnion Bar, part # RP66540. This is a weight distribution system with a tongue weight range of 200 lbs to 600 lbs, that would cover the 300-lb to 450-lb tongue weight range (loaded) on your trailer. The only other item needed would be the CURT 2 Inch Hitch Ball, part # A-90. I am including a link to the instructions on the Reese weight distribution system.

If you are wanting to add sway control I would recommend the Reese Dual Cam Sway Control, part # RP26002. This is an active sway control system that will stop sway before it begins. It can be added to the weight distribution system mentioned above. I am also including a link to the instructions on the Reese sway control.
