Recommended Weight Distribution System for 4,000 Pound Kodiak Cub Trailer

Question:

I have a 2005 GMC Envoy XL SLT 4.2 V6 and want to tow a 23foot Kodiak Cub, around 4,000 lbs. Which hitch would you recommend for my setup?

It sounds like you are looking for a weight distribution system for your 2005 GMC Envoy and Kodiak Cub Trailer. When choosing the best system, the most important factor to consider is the total tongue weight of your setup. This number includes both the loaded tongue weight of the trailer (as if loaded and ready for a trip), along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your Envoy. Ideally, this number will fall somewhere near the middle of the operating range for the system you choose.

The most accurate method for determining your trailer's loaded tongue weight is with a scale like the excellent etrailer # e99044. In the meantime though, we can take an estimate using the 4,000 pound weight that you provided in your question. If this is the fully loaded weight of the trailer, we can calculate that it will have a loaded tongue weight of around 400 to 600 pounds. This is because a trailer's tongue weight should be about 10 to 15 percent of its total weight.

If you find this to be an accurate estimate, I recommend taking a look at the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control # RP66083. This system features a tongue weight capacity of 400 to 800 pounds, which should work perfectly for your setup and still give you some wiggle room for additional cargo that you might load behind the rear axle of your Envoy. It will do a great job of evenly distributing weight over the axles of your vehicle and trailer, while the self-centering sway control will keep the trailer in line through crosswinds, cornering, and sudden swerving. The adjustable shank is included so you will just need to add a compatible hitch ball like the 2 Inch # A-90 or the 2-5/16 Inch # 19286.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this system that you can check out, along with an FAQ on weight distribution systems that you might also find helpful.
