CURT Trailer Wiring Harness Keeps Overloading When Backing Trailer Into Water

Question:

I have gone to my local garage and had them install 2 different harnesses due to them blowing up after my boat trailer got wet. Shouldnt the fuse just blow and not the actual harness? What do you recommend? I must have a exposed wire on my trailer. Thanks for your advice.

The fuse for the CURT Trailer Wiring Harness, # 55571, would blow if there was excessive power draw trying to go through it. But not if power was going through the other way for some reason (backfeeding). Make sure the shop is installing the fuse and that it is going into the correct place on your 2004 Nissan Murano. I think you are correct about the exposed wire on the trailer.

I would start with the tail light assemblies and make sure that there are no loose wires, broken connections, or nicks in the wiring. Also you will want to make sure that the tail lights are submersible. If the lights were ever replaced, it might not have been with submersible assemblies.

You can then trace the wiring from the lights up to the trailer plug again looking for any loose, broken connections or nicks in the wiring. Once you have found the issue, fixed, and waterproofed it, the only way to test it will be to back the trailer in water again.
