How to Determine the Weight Capacity of a 20' x 8.5' Cargo Trailer with Two 3,500 lb Axles

Question:

I have a 20x8.5 cargo trailer with 2 3500 lb axels = 7000 lb capacity The trailer weighs 3200 = 3800 cargo capacity I weighed the trailer today at our local weigh station and it weighs 3960 partially loaded. Does this mean I can put 3040 more cargo in the trailer? 7000# - 3960#s = 3040

There is a little more that goes into calculating how much weight you can carry than just adding the axle weight capacity, but it is a good start.

Any time you are carrying weight you will be limited by your least rated component. So even though your axles may have weight ratings of a combined 7,000 lbs, if your trailer frame is only rated for 6,500 lbs then that is what you are limited to.

There should be a sticker or stamp somewhere on your trailer frame that has a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). This tells your max loaded trailer weight is. Just be sure to get matching parts when you have to do replacements so that you don't lose your weight rating.
