Roof Rack and Kayak Carriers for a 2010 Toyota Matrix

Question:

Hi there - What roof rack do you recommend for a 2010 Toyota Matrix to carry a kayak? Can it carry 2 kayaks? If so, how LONG of a kayak can it carry and up to how many POUNDS can it carry? Can you recommend any good kayaks?

To carry kayaks, a roof rack is only part of it. You'll also want a kayak carrier, primarily because they make loading, unloading and securing the kayak significantly easier.

For the roof rack, if you have a bare roof with no rails that run front to back, I recommend the Inno # INB107 square crossbars, with the # XS250 feet, and # INSU-K5 fit kit. This kit is custom fit to your vehicle and installs quickly to your roof with secure clamps. Additionally, it includes locks to secure the rack to your roof for added security.

Prior to using the roof rack or installing, you'll want to verify your vehicle's roof capacity with the owner's manual or manufacturer to ensure that you aren't damaging the vehicle. This capacity will include the weight of the kayaks plus the carrier.

To carry kayaks I recommend the Inno # INA455 clamp on folding carrier for two kayaks, and is rated for two 70 pound kayaks. This is also an easy to load carrier. While the Inno carrier doesn't expressly limit the kayak length, generally its best to keep the kayaks at about 12 feet when transporting them.

As far as kayaks themselves, I can't make any direct recommendations, though for your vehicle's height, a lighter kayak would be most appropriate for staying within weight concerns and keeping your loading process quick and easy.
