Troubleshooting Trailer Connection on Ram Truck With Intermittent Trailer Connection  

Question:

Boy am i glad i found you guys, so i have a 2014 Ram 2500 pick up with tow pkg. i also have a 32 ft Travel trailer when i go camping i maybe get a mile down the road and it says on my dash check connection not connected but i test with by turning on my head lights the trailer ident lights come on? this happened on my 2011 Ram 2500 same thing so I thought a had a worn power cord from trailer i went bought new one properly installed it direct plug and play . and its basically the same issue what am i doing wrong and how can i fix it? thanks in advance for your help. byw when i am on the hwy towing at hwy speeds it doesnt act up it works then??

It sounds like you simply have a weak ground connection on either your truck side connection or your trailer side connection. Because it has happened on two different vehicles, I recommend changing the ground connection point on your trailer frame. You will want to make sure you have a bare metal to metal connection that is free of corrosion, rust, or debris. A weak ground will appear to function well until it doesn't and then a simple power change can cause it to work again.

I also recommend cleaning your connectors using some sand paper on the pins and then using dielectric grease # 11755 to keep moisture and debris out of the connections.
