The wiring harness # 3020-P used to plug in a trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 has a press-down release tab on both the vehicle and brake controller ends. You can see these tabs in the linked photo. You'll need to press the tab while pulling the connectors apart.
Different brands of controller and harness may have slightly different connectors but they will all typically have a release tab.
