We can certainly recommend a quality aftermarket trailer brake controller for your 2017 Ford Explorer, but since these devices are not vehicle-specific you have a lot of options. We can offer you a few top choices and help you with the installation process too.

The gold standard in brake controllers is the Prodigy P2 # 90885. This controller offers proven reliability and the flexibility to allow use with multiple types of trailer brakes. More than 1400 of our customers that own this have rated it highly as a quality brake controller. For those with multiple trailers the step-up controller, the P3 # 90195, includes storable brake settings that make use with more than one trailer a lot easier. If you prefer a budget-friendly alternative consider the Voyager # 39510-20127.

Usually the Explorer will come with either no trailer wiring or with a 4-pole flat type connector such as # C55384. Now if the round connector you mention is the same as the ones on the other end of this product (and which is shown in the linked image) then you can use this part # C55384 to give you a starting 4-pole harness which will be upgraded to a 7-way for use with the brake controller.

The actual 7-way trailer socket you will need is # 37185 and this comes in our all-inclusive brake controller install kit # ETBC7. Once you have a working 4-pole harness all you need is the controller itself and the # ETBC7 install kit, which includes all of the other items needed, including things like the required connectors and circuit breakers.

A help article and video for the # ETBC7 installation kit are linked for your reference. These will give you the entire installation process.
