Kayak Carrier for 95 Pound Kayak and 2005 Mazda Tribute or 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander

Question:

Can you recommend a rooftop kayak carrier for either a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander w/factory rails or a 2005 Mazda tribute with factory crossbar rails? We want to carry a 2017 Hobie Tandem Oasis with is about 95 pounds.

Since your 2005 Mazda Tribute has crossbars that run side to side on the roof I will make my recommendations for it. The Outlander would need to have crossbars added if it only has side rails and that represents additional cost.

I recommend the Rhino-Rack J-style carrier # S512 since it can fold down flat and also has a weight capacity of 99 pounds. You will want to check the roof rack and/or the owner's manual for the Tribute though to make sure it is rated high enough for your 95 pound kayak.

If it is not rated high enough then check the side rails on the Outlander to see if they are rated higher. If so then you can add some crossbars using # MPG201 and the Rhino-rack carrier listed above.
