Recommended Replacement Brake Assemblies For Axle-12x2 Inch With 4-Bolt Mounting Flange

Question:

Hi,I am looking to replace the brake assemblies a dexter ? axle. They are 12x2 inch with a 4 bolt mounting flange.I see you carry the dexter assembly for 4 and 5 bolt flanges. Do you see a problem with me buying your off brand 5 bolt flange assembly and drilling the back plate for 4 bolt?

I do not recommend drilling another hole on the back plate to make a 5-bolt flange out of your 4-bolt flange. This would not be safe and will weaken the overall integrity of the plate and axle. Also, the 4 holes of a 5 hole flange do not line up with the 4 holes of a 4 hole flange.

Based on your information, it sound like you have an Al-Ko/Hayes axle. If this is the case then I recommend the Dexter Electric Brake Kit, Item # 23-105-106-09. This kit works with 12 x 2 inch brakes and has a 4-bolt or 5-bolt mounting flange option. These brakes are designed to be used with 6000-lb axles.

If this option will not work for you, send me your axle weight capacity and I will make a specific recommendation.

I have also attached an FAQ article about brakes that should help with your project.
