Recommendation For Weight Distribution And/Or Sway Bar Options For Towing Travel Trailer

Question:

Hello, I am trying to see if I can get some advice on if I need a weight distribution kit or sway bar, or both. I currently drive a 2008 Nissan Frontier 4.0 V6 with 6500 pounds towing capacity. I have a Class V hitch on it that is rated for 8,000 pounds max gross trailer weight, 800 pounds max tongue weight. It also has max gross trailer weight of 5,000 pounds and 750 max tongue weight on a weight carrying ball mount which is what I currently have. I'm looking to purchase a travel trailer in the near future which will be anywhere from 18 feet to 22 feet long, with an average gross weight of 3100-3400 pounds tongue weight 300-400. I've read that if your trailer weight meets 50 of your towing, you should get a weight distribution/sway kit. I feel like I'm in that gray area where I could do without one but it would increase safety to have one. If possible, please advise what I should do with this scenario. If it is possible to tow safely with my setup then I will not purchase a kit, however if needed I will invest in one for the sake of safety. Thank you for your help!

Because your loaded and ready to go total trailer weight sounds like it will be more than 50 percent of your vehicle's weight, I recommend considering weight distribution systems with sway control included so that you have a smoother and safer ride. After you purchase your trailer, determine its tongue weight when loaded and ready to go and include anything packed from your rear axle to the end of your truck bed (see FAQ article). Ideally, you want your tongue weight to land in the middle of the tongue weight range of your weight distribution system.

Based on your information, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/2-Point Sway Control, Item # FA92-00-0600. This system distributes weight over all your axles and the 2-point sway control minimizes sway, especially sway caused by winds or sudden maneuvers. This system will allow you to back up with your trailer. An adjustable shank and all the hardware is included. It has a tongue weight capacity of 250-lbs to 600-lbs and a gross towing weight capacity of 6,000-lbs.

A hitch ball will be needed and is not included. I have attached a link to our selections if you need one.

I also recommend the Powerbuilt 1-7/8 inch 12pt Vanadium Steel Socket, Item # ALL643216, so that the hitch ball installation will be much easier.

I am attaching additional information, videos, and a link to our weight distribution department to assist with your project.
