For your 2007 Ford Escape XLT, I recommend you start with the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Class III # 75751. This is a 2 inch receiver that is a custom fit for your vehicle.
For your trailer wiring, I recommend you start with the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118426. This will connect to your factory wiring behind your tail lights and draw power directly from your battery. Then you will use the Brake Controller Wiring Kit # ETBC7 to utilize that 4-way and add the other functions to give you a 7-way.
For your brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This controller is a proportional controller that will apply your trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity as you hit the brake pedal in your Escape. It has an easy to understand LCD screen instead of error coding and has presets for easy selection of braking intensity.
