Can Ground Wires for Trailer Lights Run Back to Ground of Trailer Connector
Question:
I have a 7 pin plug for my boat trailer. Recently I have had problems with the ground connected to the trailer frame. As I am about to rewire the whole harness, what I want to know is if I can just connected the ground wires from all the leds to the ground pin on the plug ? And not have a ground connected to the trailer frame itself at all. It seems that this would save the problem with corrosion around the earth points on the trailer. The 7 pin plug on the vehicle has a corresponding earth pin also.

What you described will work well for grounding your lights. You can run the ground wires of each of the lights back to the ground wire of your trailer connector and your lights will work great. It's the other acceptable way to ground the lights other than through the trailer frame like you mentioned.
