Correct Brake Controller Plug-In Harness For 2009 GMC Sierra SLE w/ Factory Tow Package
Question:
We have a 2009 GMC Sierra with the tow package. Even though the part says it only goes to a 2002 model year, will this work on the 2009 model? We cant seem to find anything to fit the existing tow package on our vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

On your 2009 GMC Sierra that is equipped with a tow package, the wiring to install a brake controller is already ran from the factory and a plug-in adapter is not needed.
You will find a bundle of wires below the dash to the left of the brake pedal. The wires should be taped up and tucked up and out of the way. There should also be a label on the tape of the functions of each wire. You will want to connect these wires to the wires coming out of the back of the brake controller (see FAQ).
On many newer GM vehicles, there are 5 wires in the bundle. Blue is usually electric brake output. Red is usually 12-volt power. Light Blue is usually the stoplight switch. White is usually the ground. The orange wire will not be used so it can be taped up and placed out of the way. The wire colors coming out of the brake controller are as follows: White is ground, Black is 12-volt power, Red is stoplight switch, and Blue is brake control output. You will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test wire functions.
To complete your brake controller installation, there may also be a few connections under the hood and fuses that will need to be installed (see FAQ).
If you do not have wires running out of the brake controller, and you have a Hopkins brake controller you can use the Hopkins # HM47795 Adapter. But you would need to cut off the vehicle side plug and then connect the wires.
I have linked an FAQ Article on installing a brake controller on 2008 and newer GMC and Chevrolet trucks. I have also linked a video installation of a brake controller on a 2008 GMC Sierra which shows the location of the bundled wires.
