The Convert-A-Ball Multi-Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter, part # CAB-C5G will work in truck beds that are between 6 feet and 8 feet in length. They are not to be used in trucks with less than a 6 foot bed. The short bed on your 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 should be 6 foot, but I would recommend to check to make sure.

The adapter will bolt to any standard Fifth Wheel king pin, but you will need to take some measurements to be sure it will fit. After backing the vehicle under the trailer, measure from the top of the ball on the truck to the base of the pin box on the trailer. Once you have this measurement, you can decide if you need the 12, 14, or 16 inch adapter.

You may want to look into using an offset Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter on a vehicle with a 6 foot bed. That extra space between your trailer and truck cab creates additional clearance to allow you to make tighter turns, but it will not allow you to make a full 90 degree turn without hitting your cab.

You would choose the correct offset adapter by using the height measurement that was mentioned earlier. If you need a height of 12 inches to 16 inches you will use the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter w/ Offset - 12 to 14 Inches Tall, part # CAB-C5GX1216.
