Best WD System for a Trailer with a TW of 700 lbs and 6,000 lbs GVWR

Question:

So my TW is 700 lbs, and my GRTW is 6,000 lbs. I am looking at buying an equalizer weight distribution hitch. Can I go with something like a 1,200 lbs TW, and 12,000 lbs GTW. That what when I upgrade to a bigger trailer in the future I will be all good to go?

When choosing a Weight Distribution (WD) system you want system with a Tongue Weight (TW) range that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your towing setup falls in the middle of. To find the TTW of your towing setup you will need to add the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer along with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Keep in mind that a properly loaded trailer will have a TW that is 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer.

If your trailer TW is 700 lbs then the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37120ET, which is rated for 12,000 lbs GTW with a TW range of 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs, might be a good option for you if you have at least 100 lbs of weight behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Otherwise if you only have 700 lbs it will make your towing experience too stiff and you would want to go with the part # EQ37100ET instead which has a TW range of 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs.

Both systems come with everything you need including a shank and a 2-5/16" hitch ball, however it is recommended that you use a thin-walled socket, like part # EQ70-00-4800, to make installation of the hitch ball much easier.

I know you referenced the Equal-i-zer brand, but I just wanted to make you aware that the Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 has a TW range of 600 lbs - 1,200 lbs so you wouldn't have to worry as much about being rated for too much or too little. A shank is included with this system but the hitch ball is sold separately. For a 2" hitch ball you can use part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16" hitch ball you can use part # 19286.

I have attached some review videos and helpful articles for you to check out as well.
