Recommend 3-Bike Trunk-Mount Rack Options For 2008 Mazda 3 Sedan
Question:
I am looking for a bike rack for either a 2008 Mazda3 4-door, or a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. I would preferably like one that could fit on the Mazda, and can carry 3 bikes. If a hitch rack I want something that doesnt scrape when im driving. I do not want roof rackspreferably a hitch mount. It looks as if the only hitches available are 1-1/4, and that the only racks available for the Mazda 3 with a 1-1/4 hitch are the 2-bike racks. I need something with at least 3. Please Help. Thanks! :

I do have a solution for you to carry 3 bikes on your 2008 Mazda 3 Sedan, but since there are only Class I hitch receivers available for your vehicle, you would be limited to using a 2-bike hitch rack with a Class I hitch. As you noted, Class I hitches are limited to carrying 2 bikes due to the stresses applied on a hitch from a loaded bike rack.
What you can do is use a trunk mounted 3 bike rack like the Saris Bones 3 Bike Rack, part # SA801BL. This trunk mounted bike rack will only fit the Mazda 3 Sedan/4-Door model, it will not fit the Mazda 3 hatchback/5 door model. It will also fit your 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt 2 or 4 door model.
When mounting a trunk bike rack to your vehicle, you will want to make sure the exterior finish of the vehicle where the rack will mount is clean to prevent scratching. You will also want to clean the mounting points of the bike rack. I would also recommend waxing the area on the vehicle where the bike rack will mount to further prevent scratching.
If you will be carrying womens, childrens, or alternative frame bicycles, I would recommend using the Yakima Tube Top Bike Adapter Bar, part # Y02531. This adapter bar will allow you to carry those types of bikes level on your bike rack.
I have linked an FAQ on trunk bike racks and a video review of the Yakima Tube Top Bike Adapter Bar, part # Y02531.
