Which Weight Distribution Works Best With SuperTruss

Question:

I have a 2013 ram 3500 dually diesel truck. I just installed a torklift magnum 30k receiver and 42inch supertruss so I can pull with my Lance 113inch truck camper on the truck. The trailer I am pulling is a Big Tex 10PI that is 20ft long. Trailer rating is 9990 lb and weighs about 2400 lb. I will have a vehicle on the trailer and other misc. Items with a total weight on trailer around 5,000 to 6,000 lbs. What rated weight distribution hitch is needed ie 1000 or 1200 lb and which type/brand would you recommend with supertruss instslled?

Weight distribution systems are rated with a tongue weight range that you want your setup to land in the middle of. Because your trailer's loaded weight will be between 5,000 and 6,000 pounds it's likely the tongue weight will be between 500 and 720 pounds. A trailer's tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of its total weight.

In addition to the trailer's tongue weight you need to factor in the amount of weight stored behind the rear axle of your 2013 RAM 3500 because it acts as tongue weight for a weight distribution system. Depending on this weight you could be pushing the limits of a 1,000 pound rated system so I recommend going with the 1,200 pound.

If you're looking for basic weight distribution, I like the Reese Trunnion bar, #RP66542. It doesn't have a sway control feature but it will help level and stabilize your ride.

For an upgrade that does include sway control instead look at the Reese strait-line, part # RP66084. It uses a dual cam sway control that stops sway before it begins as opposed to fighting it
after the fact like your typical friction style systems do.

I've linked videos of both systems for you to check out. Also, neither of them include a hitch ball you need to purchase one separately. For either system you can use part # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball or part # A-90 for a 2 inch.

I've linked videos on the hitch balls as well.
