Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Displays Random Numbers on Screen

Question:

when I was towing my trailer the display was showing random numbers ranging from 9 to 30 even when I was not applying the brake and even when I was stopped and had parked it still displayed 24 on the display

Check the red wire of your brake controller. Sounds like it is shorting out to a 12 volt power source which is telling the controller that it needs to be looking for braking activity and apply braking voltage.
